FAQ
What is the warranty period on Ziptrak® blinds?
From 1 September 2024, all genuine Ziptrak® components are now covered by an extended 5-year warranty (previously 2 years). This applies to both our Outdoor and Interior systems, giving you even more confidence that your blinds are built to last.
If you ever experience an issue, simply contact your retailer — they’ll be your first point of support. Retailers may also provide their own warranty on top of Ziptrak®’s, so it’s worth confirming the details with them when you make your purchase.
A couple of things to keep in mind:
- The fabric/skin of the blind is not manufactured by Ziptrak®, so it is not included in the Ziptrak® warranty.
- To keep your warranty valid, your blinds need to be fabricated and installed according to our official manuals.
With genuine components and professional installation, you can relax knowing your Ziptrak® blinds are backed by years of reliable performance and support.
How much do Ziptrak® blinds cost?
Ziptrak® blinds are custom-made, so price depends on:
- System type (Outdoor or Interior)
- Size
- Material (Outdoor: PVC or mesh / Interior: light filtering and blockout options)
- Operation (manual or motorised)
- Installation complexity
We recommend contacting your local Ziptrak® Retailer for an accurate quote. Find yours, here.
How do I know I’m receiving a genuine Ziptrak® product?
Beware of Imitations – Choose Genuine Ziptrak®

Can I leave blinds down on windy days?
Ziptrak® Outdoor Track-Guided blinds are trusted by thousands of Australian homes and businesses to create comfortable outdoor living spaces. Our track-guided system is designed to be strong and robust with blinds commonly installed in coastal areas and regions prone to high winds.
To assess performance, our engineers tested Ziptrak® Outdoor Track-Guided blinds using the recommended fixing method for blinds over four metres wide or in windy locations.

Ziptrak® Track-Guided Blinds – Windy Conditions
- In very strong winds, storms, or severe weather, blinds must always be fully retracted.
- Correct installation is essential for optimal performance in windy conditions.
- In windy conditions, the halfway position is the most vulnerable, as the fabric acts like a sail and amplifies wind pressure. To protect your blinds when it is windy, always keep them either fully down and locked or completely retracted.
- Manual spring-balanced blinds may be harder to operate in windy conditions due to pressure on the fabric. To assist, gently press the fabric with one hand while moving the bottom bar with the other.
- Motorised blinds may not move smoothly if wind pressure is pushing against the fabric. Always supervise operation to prevent motor strain or damage.
Ziptrak® Cable-Guided Blinds – Windy Conditions
- In very strong winds, storms, or severe weather, cable-guided blinds should be fully retracted.
- Correct installation is crucial for optimal performance in windy conditions.
- Motorised blinds must be supervised at all times when raising or lowering.
Can Ziptrak® Outdoor Blinds be locked?
Ziptrak® Track-Guided Blinds
Both ends of the bottom bar on a manually operated Ziptrak® Track-Guided blind feature a locking mechanism to keep the blind fully down and secure in high winds.
- To unlock the blind, lift the centre lock release handle and raise the bottom bar.
Manually operated blinds can also be unlocked from the opposite side of the bottom bar using an optional reverse handle locking mechanism. This is useful for households where people enter the home from multiple directions and need access from both sides of the blind.
Important safety notes:
- The locking mechanism is not a household security feature, though lowered blinds can act as a visual deterrent.
- The locking mechanism is not child-proof and does not serve as a barrier for babies or young children.
For motorised blinds, the bottom bar does not have a locking mechanism, as all operation is controlled via the blind motor.
Ziptrak® Cable-Guided Blinds
Cable-guided blinds do not have a locking mechanism; the bottom bar is raised and lowered with either a crank handle or a motor.
What are Outdoor Track-Guided blinds?
The Ziptrak® Outdoor Track-Guided blind system is a patented Australian invention designed to make outdoor living more comfortable.
Unlike channel-only outdoor blind systems, the Ziptrak® Outdoor Track-Guided blind system uses vertical tracks within a channel on each side to guide and secure the fabric. This track-guided design prevents the sides of the blind flapping in the wind and creates a sealed barrier to help keep out dust, dirt, and insects from outdoor areas. The sealed barrier also enhances comfort by trapping warmth in winter or blocking heat in summer, making outdoor areas usable all year round.
- Manual, non‑motorised blinds are spring‑balanced, making them lightweight and easy to operate via the bottom bar. When fully lowered, spring‑balanced blinds lock securely into place.
- Motorised operation is also a popular choice, offering the convenience of controlling blinds with the touch of a button via a remote control or wall switch.
Blinds can also be stopped at any height along the track allowing users to fine‑tune their protection from the sun, rain, wind as well as controlling the airflow, privacy, and views from their outdoor area. When retracted, blinds roll neatly into a protective pelmet at the top, or the roll can be left exposed without a pelmet if preferred.
Can Ziptrak® Blinds be installed DIY?
No. Every Ziptrak® blind is custom-made to the exact measurements of your opening with specialised components. To achieve the best fit, performance, and appearance, Ziptrak® blinds must be installed by an experienced installer of our products.
Installers in our Retailer network receive specific training in the Ziptrak® system and bring years of experience to ensure your blinds are robust and reliable. What are the maximum dimensions for Ziptrak® Outdoor blinds?
The maximum dimensions of the Ziptrak® Outdoor Track-Guided blind system are:
- 6000mm wide by 3500mm high for Sunscreen Mesh blinds.
- 5500mm wide by 3500mm high for PVC blinds
If an outdoor space is wider than the maximum size for a single blind, a Ziptrak® removable post solution allows you to place two or more track-guided blinds side by side. Removable posts are easy to use and can be removed in under 60 seconds, creating a completely open expanse whenever you need it.
The maximum dimensions of the Ziptrak® Cable-Guided blind system are:
- 5500mm wide by 3500mm high for both Sunscreen Mesh and PVC blinds.
What type of surfaces can Outdoor Blinds be mounted to?
Ziptrak® Outdoor blinds can be installed onto a wide range of outdoor structures, making them suitable for almost any outdoor space.
Common outdoor mounting surfaces include timber, steel, brick, aluminium, and concrete.
Each installation is customised, with the correct fixings for the material of the outdoor structure, blinds can be securely mounted to deliver lasting strength and performance.
Is it possible to install Ziptrak® Track-Guided Blinds on Large Openings (over 6m)?
If your outdoor space is wider than the maximum size of a single Track-Guided blind, you can easily install two or more blinds side by side by using Ziptrak® removable posts.
Your Retailer can supply removable posts made from steel or aluminium, that are powder-coated to match your Ziptrak® tracks, channels, bottom bar and pelmet.
The removable post can be taken out in under 60 seconds, giving you a completely open expanse whenever you want it.

Do I need council approval to install Outdoor Blinds?
Generally local government organisations do not require approval for installing outdoor blinds in residential properties.
However, you should confirm the rules with your local council, as requirements can vary.
If your property is part of a community group or strata, additional restrictions may apply.
For balconies in multi-storey buildings, the Ziptrak® Outdoor Track-Guided system using Nolan’s Vistaweave 95 fabric is ISO 13785-1:2002 fire-tested and certified, meeting safety standards for flame spread and debris control.
Can I have motorised Ziptrak® blinds?
Motorisation is a popular and convenient operation option for Ziptrak® Track-Guided and Cable-Guided blinds. It’s especially useful when blinds are hard to reach or for people who may find manual operation challenging. In commercial settings, motorisation makes it easy to control many blinds at once.
With motorised Track-Guided blinds, strong winds pressing against the fabric can prevent smooth movement within the side tracks. For this reason, it is recommended to supervise motorised blinds while they are moving to avoid motor damage.
PVC blinds can sometimes be motorised, providing the risks of using PVC fabrics with a motor are carefully considered. For advice on a specific installation, speak with your Retailer.
Keep in mind that motorisation of PVC blinds is not recommended for environments where temperatures are likely to drop below 5°C. At low temperatures, PVC hardens and becomes inflexible, which can prevent the blind from operating correctly.
What Outdoor Blind colours are available?
The colour of your Ziptrak® Outdoor Blind can be personalised to suit your style and requirements.
Component Colours
Ziptrak® offers a standard range of 7 colours for tracks, channels, bottom bars and pelmets for its Outdoor Track-Guided system, or for a totally individual look you can choose to tailor these components with a customised powder-coat colour.

Please note custom powder-coating usually incurs an additional cost compared to the standard range.
For the Outdoor Cable-Guided system, Ziptrak® offers a standard range of 4 colours for the bottom bar and pelmet.

Customised power-coat colours for the Cable-Guided blinds may also be offered by your Retailer; this usually incurs an additional cost compared to the standard range.
Fabric Options
Once you’ve selected your fabric type—Sunscreen Mesh or PVC—you’ll have further choices to consider.
Sunscreen Mesh Fabric
- Available in a wide variety of colours, weaves and brands.
- The colour and weave openness of the mesh affects:
- Visibility & Privacy – balance your view of the outdoors with desired privacy.
- Weather Protection – tighter weaves block more wind and rain.
- Ventilation – open weaves allow greater airflow.
- Dust Control – tighter weaves help reduce dust entering your space.
PVC Fabric
- Available in clear or smoke tint.
- Provides:
- Full outward visibility
- Weather protection
- No privacy
- High-quality, dimensionally stable (DS) PVC is recommended to prevent issues such as yellowing, cloudiness, brittleness, or changes in shape from environmental conditions such as heat and humidity.
- Achilles Roll Clear is a leading high quality Japanese DS PVC fabric for Outdoor Blinds.
Important Note
The fabric used in a Ziptrak® outdoor blind is not manufactured by Ziptrak® itself. Your retailer will guide you in selecting the right type, colour and weave to meet your needs from the outdoor fabric range that they offer.
Track-Guided Blinds: What fabric appearance should I expect?
Ziptrak® Outdoor Track-Guided blinds are custom-made to exact measurements for each installation and can be paired with a wide range of Sunscreen Mesh and PVC fabrics, these are supplied by third-party manufacturers rather than Ziptrak Pty Ltd.
Both Sunscreen Mesh and PVC outdoor blind fabrics are durable materials designed to withstand Australia’s harsh climate and extreme temperature changes. They are flexible materials that may show irregularities in their finish.
Several factors can influence the appearance of the fabric in a Ziptrak® Track-Guided blind, including:
- Size of the opening
- Product selection
- Installation
- Weather and wind conditions
- User operation method
Ziptrak® Track-Guided Blinds are designed for smooth, effortless use. The fabric rests within a track system, creating a sealed barrier while allowing the blind to glide up and down with ease. Because the outdoor fabric is flexible, it won’t look like a solid panel or glass.
Here are some other important points to keep in mind:
- Newly installed blinds may take a few days to “settle” since the fabric has been tightly rolled around the top tube before installation. With normal weather conditions, most fabric distortions will lessen or disappear.
- In some cases, users may notice a slight baggy effect in the middle of the fabric if a blind is left halfway down. This happens because of how the fabric rolls around the top tube and is common with many track-guided blinds, regardless of brand. The bagginess can usually be reduced by fully retracting the blind, then lowering it back to the halfway point. When fully lowered, the fabric should appear smooth with minimal sagging.
If you have any questions or concerns about the look or performance of your Ziptrak® Track-Guided blind, please contact your retailer or reach out to our friendly customer relation team at Ziptrak Pty Ltd https://www.ziptrak.com.au/contact
Should I buy PVC or Sunscreen Mesh blinds?
The best fabric for your outdoor blinds depends on the type of protection you want. Café Blinds, made from clear or tinted PVC, create a complete barrier against rain, wind, dust, and insects—while still giving you an uninterrupted view outside. Because they are fully sealed, track-guided PVC blinds are also highly effective at keeping warmth in and maintaining the existing temperature of your outdoor space.
If you’d prefer some airflow while reducing sun, glare, dust, and insects, Sunscreen Mesh or Shade Blinds are the better option. Made from fabric with small perforations, they block a high percentage of wind and rain depending on the weave, help regulate temperature, and provide more privacy than PVC.
Why is there no Zip in a Ziptrak® Blind?
Ziptrak® has been manufacturing outdoor blinds since the turn of the millennium — the year 2000 — when our founder and inventor, Tony de Maaijer, first designed, built, and installed outdoor blinds for a restaurant in Adelaide, South Australia.
At the time, there were no other track-guided systems on the Australian market. Tony used to describe the operation of the blind as “zippy,” meaning it moved easily up and down the track and could be used by people of all ages and abilities. There was no actual zipper in the blind, as Tony had invented an innovative method of holding the fabric in the track using a side spline. Tony always regarded a zipper as something for clothing, not for blinds — and he still does!
The brand name “Ziptrak®” was inspired by the effortless, zippy motion of the blind gliding smoothly along the track — but there has never been an actual zipper in the product. Our engineers have rigorously tested zippers, and the results are clear: Ziptrak®’s patented side spline technology is far stronger, more durable, and more reliable than a zipper could ever be.
Over the past 25 years, this innovation has set the standard for outdoor blinds. With imitations — often featuring zippers — “Ziptrak®” has become a generic descriptive term for a product category, much like Band-Aid® or Corn Flakes®.
There is only one Genuine Ziptrak®.
What is a Pelmet? Do Ziptrak® Outdoor Blinds have a Pelmet?
A pelmet is a protective cover fitted over the top of an outdoor blind. It conceals the fabric roll and internal components, shielding them from weather and environmental elements. Beyond protection, pelmets enhance the appearance of outdoor blinds. They integrate seamlessly with outdoor structures, creating a premium, built-in look.
Ziptrak® offers the Streamline Pelmet for both its Track-Guided and Cable-Guided Outdoor Blind Systems. Made from durable extruded aluminium, the fully enclosed design is engineered to withstand tough conditions and provide maximum insect protection —helping blinds maintain their appearance and operate smoothly for years.
While not essential for Track-Guided blinds, a pelmet is highly recommended, especially in exposed locations. For Cable-Guided blinds, a Streamline Pelmet is included as standard.
What is the size of a Ziptrak® Pelmet?
The Ziptrak® Outdoor Track-Guided blind system offers two pelmet styles: Streamline and Traditional.
Streamline Pelmets have square design with a modern sleek appearance, available in two sizes – 135mm and 165mm.

Traditional Pelmets, with a multi-angle style profile, are also available in two sizes – 135mm and 175mm.

The correct pelmet size for an Outdoor Track-Guided blind is determined by a Fabricator. Selection is based on the blind’s opening height, width, and fabric choice (Sunscreen Mesh or PVC), the pelmet size is not affected by the type of blind operation (manual or motorised). If you have multiple blinds of different sizes, your Retailer will discuss matching pelmet sizes to ensure a consistent appearance across all blinds.
The Ziptrak® Outdoor Cable-Guided blind system is available with a Streamline 135mm pelmet only.
What types of Ziptrak® Bottom Bars are available?
Ziptrak® Bottom Bars feature a sleek, modern profile that complements any installation. Manufactured from extruded aluminum, they deliver exceptional strength, durability, and long-lasting performance.
The Ziptrak® Outdoor Track-Guided blind system offers two bottom bar options:
- Streamline Bottom Bar – Recommended for Sunscreen Mesh blinds up to 5m wide and PVC blinds up to 5.5m wide.
- Extra Heavy-Duty Bottom Bar – 50% stronger than the Streamline, providing superior performance and recommended for Sunscreen Mesh blinds up to 6m wide.
The Ziptrak® Outdoor Cable-Guided blind system is available with the Streamline Bottom Bar, suitable for Sunscreen Mesh and PVC blinds up to 5m wide.
Can Ziptrak® Outdoor Blinds be operated using a crank handle?
Ziptrak® offers two outdoor blind systems. The Cable-Guided system includes crank and assisted crank operation options.
The Track-Guided system features a spring-balanced operation, allowing you to raise or lower the bottom bar by hand quickly. It does not have a crank option.
The Cable-Guided system is ideal for outdoor areas with minimal structural support or where Track-Guided blinds are not suitable.
Both the Ziptrak® Track-Guided and Cable-Guided blind systems can also be motorised.
How are Ziptrak® blinds different to other brands?
Ziptrak® is a brand of outdoor track guided blinds, protected under patent and invented in Australia. Customers should check whether they are purchasing a genuine Ziptrak® system.

Next, Ziptrak® also has a unique method for attaching the blind material to the vertical tracks. We only utilise the finest materials with exceptional engineering and a patented design. Our system has a strong reputation within the industry, and is often imitated but never duplicated. This results in a secure hold, even with minor house movement and wind pressure on the fabric. The Ziptrak® system will not rattle in the wind, unlike many of the other brands. We also have unique optional extras such as the SolarSmart 100% solar power motorised operation.
What are Ziptrak® Interior Blinds?
Ziptrak® Interior Blinds provide superior insulation, privacy and sun protection. They are an innovative approach to traditional blinds for indoor living environments. Ziptrak® Interior Blinds are track guided, which means the blind material runs securely within a vertical track on both sides. When retracted, the blind is neatly hidden within a discrete and modern pelmet.
Capitalising on our patented track guided blind system; we re-engineered every element to be slimmer and more subtle. Each detail required meticulous design, utilising the most exceptional materials and finishing options. The result is a remarkably unobtrusive form, with timeless simplicity, worthy of its presence within your home.
How is the Ziptrak® Interior blind operated?
The Ziptrak® Interior blind can be either hand operated or motorised. With hand operation, the blind is spring balanced, resulting in the blind weight being supported by a tensioned spring inside the pelmet. The subtle bottom bar is easily moved with the touch of a finger, allowing you to open or close the blind in seconds, or leave at any intermediate position along the track. When retracted, depending on the height your blind is installed at, you may not be able to reach the bottom bar to lower the blind. To assist you, there is also an optional pull stick which extends your reach, so that you are able to pull the bottom bar down.
For motorised blinds, there is no visual difference when compared to a manual hand operated blind. You’ll have a simple, easy-to-use remote that allows you to open or close the blind with one touch. Whilst in movement, touch again to stop the blind and leave it at any position along the track.
Neither manual or motorised Ziptrak® blinds require cords or chains, which add unnecessary clutter to your window and a safety risk to children.
What are the maximum dimensions for Ziptrak® Interior Blinds?
A single Ziptrak® Interior blind can be a maximum of 3000mm wide, with a 2800mm drop. The minimum width is 450mm.
For drops up to 1600mm, the pelmet size is 75mm for most fabrics. Drops over 1600mm require a 95mm pelmet size – depending on the fabric selection.
What blind materials are available for Ziptrak® Interior blinds?

- Commercial hotel or accommodation providers who require a robust, easy to maintain and simple to use solution for guests
Why are Ziptrak® Interior blinds great for insulation?
Ziptrak® Interior blinds have superior insulation properties to lower your energy bills, reduce your environmental impact and make your space more comfortable. Traditional blinds, such as panel drapes, roller blinds and venetians all have huge gaps that allow heat to enter during summer and escape during winter. Even cellular blinds, which are known for great insulation performance, aren’t a sealed system as there is a gap to the left and right.
Ziptrak® Interior solves this issue with an innovative track guided system, where the blind material runs within vertical tracks, creating an effective temperature barrier. The tracks are mounted flush against your window frame with highly precise custom installation for every situation.
I have a large set of windows which are floor to ceiling, what options do I have with Ziptrak® Interior?
The Ziptrak® Interior blind have a maximum width of 3000mm and drop of 2800mm. With multiple window and door openings, you can split into multiple blinds to effectively cover the area. When pelmets are mounted very high for windows that reach ceilings, motorisation is a popular option. If you have a door opening within a set of windows, it is advisable to have the door opening covered by a separate blind. This allows you to have the other windows covered, whilst the door blind is left retracted.
Why should I choose track guided interior blinds?
There are many advantages to a track guided system:
- Advanced light blocking – no light-gaps on either side of the blind
- Spring balanced – leave the blind at any height
- Hand operated – pull down, push up with the touch of a finger
- Motorised – simple remote for electric operation, leave at any height
- Child safe – no cords or chains
- Superior insulation – no gaps for heat to enter during summer or escape during winter*
